OpenAI Urges U.S. Government to Allow Training on Copyrighted Content

(MENAFN) OpenAI, the creator of the artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT, has urged the US government to allow AI companies to train on copyrighted content in order to “strengthen America’s lead” in the AI sector.

The company submitted a suggestion as part of a broader initiative introduced to the government on Thursday, aligning with the forthcoming “AI Action Plan” led by Leader Donald Trump.

The administration has asked for feedback from various sectors, including the private industry, government, as well as academic institutions, in support of a policy shift that aims to prevent overly restrictive regulations that might hinder innovation.

OpenAI's proposal advocates for a “freedom-focused” regulatory approach, urging the federal government to remove laws that require AI developers in the US to follow stringent state regulations.

One of the primary obstacles faced by AI developers is the issue of copyright. Many companies train their models using human-generated content without informing the original creators, obtaining permission, or offering compensation, as reported by a news agency.

OpenAI's proposal emphasized, “The federal government can both secure Americans’ freedom to learn from AI, and avoid forfeiting our AI lead to the (PRC) People’s Republic of China by preserving American AI models’ ability to learn from copyrighted material.”
