Migrant Boat Capsizes Near Lampione Island
(MENAFN) A boat carrying illegal migrants trying to make the dangerous journey from Africa to Europe capsized near Lampione Island in the Mediterranean, resulting in at least six fatalities and leaving 40 individuals missing, according to local reports on Wednesday.
Italian authorities managed to save 10 migrants from the overturned boat near Lampione Island, which lies to the west of Lampedusa. They also recovered six bodies from the water, as reported by an Italian news agency.
The vessel was intercepted on Tuesday afternoon by Italian Coast Guard and Financial Police ships while it was close to Lampione Island, situated off Lampedusa’s coast.
Following the tragedy, 10 survivors—comprising six men as well as four women—were rescued, and the bodies of six others were recovered.
The survivors, who were brought to Lampedusa, shared their harrowing ordeal. They revealed that they had departed from the Tunisian city of Sfax late Sunday night aboard a rubber dinghy.
Less than a day into their journey, while still in international waters, the boat was hit by rough waves, which led to many people falling overboard.
