Gang found guilty of robbing golden toilet

(MENAFN) Three men have been found guilty of stealing a solid gold toilet worth $6.4 million from Blenheim Palace in England.

On Tuesday, a jury at Oxford Crown Court convicted James Sheen, Michael Jones, and Frederick Doe of burglary in connection with the 2019 theft of the 18-carat toilet, an artwork by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan.

The piece, titled "America," was originally displayed at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, where it symbolized both the extravagance of the art market and the American dream. During its time at the Guggenheim in 2016, over 100,000 visitors lined up to use the fully functional toilet. It was later moved to Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, where it was stolen in a daring overnight raid.

According to prosecutor Shan Saunders, five individuals were involved in the theft. The gang ripped the toilet from its installation and quickly disposed of it. Authorities believe the gold was either broken down, melted, or sold, as it was never recovered.

“This was a bold and meticulously planned robbery," Saunders told the court. "However, the criminals left behind crucial evidence, including forensic traces, CCTV footage, and phone records, leading to their conviction.”
