Russian politician suggests females should wear miniskirts to increase demographics

(MENAFN) A local politician in the Russian town of Tarusa has suggested that women should wear miniskirts in summer to encourage marriage and increase the country’s birth rate.

Evgeny Rudenko, a member of the local council from the Liberal Democratic Party, made the comment on social media, stating that deputies “request that Tarusa women wear miniskirts more often on sunny days to boost Russia’s demographics.” His remark sparked backlash online, prompting him to clarify that it was intended as a joke. However, he defended the idea by arguing that short skirts attract young men, which could lead to marriage and children.

Nina Ostanina, head of the State Duma Committee on Family, Women, and Children, criticized Rudenko’s statement, advising him to focus on real issues rather than commenting on women’s clothing. Russian lawmakers have previously faced criticism for controversial demographic proposals, including taxing childlessness and requiring employers to track birth rates among staff.

Russia’s birth rate fell to its lowest level since 1999 last year, and the population has been gradually shrinking, dropping from 149 million in 1993 to 144 million in 2023. To address the issue, the government has expanded financial incentives for families, promoted traditional values, and banned the promotion of a “child-free lifestyle.” Officials predict the birth rate will start rising again by 2028.
