Exclusive: The United States Restores Most Grants To Jordan (Details)

AmmanNet has learned from independent sources that the administration of U.S. President Donald trump has quietly agreed to restore most of the grants provided to the Jordanian government. The U.S. Embassy in Amman did not comment on the matter at the time of writing.

According to informed sources, the U.S. government has deposited $845.1 million into Jordan's account, allocated to support the country's economic modernization. Additionally, approximately $431 million designated for the Jordanian Armed Forces, aimed at promoting peace and security in Jordan, has been reinstated. Several humanitarian grants-supporting Jordan's water carrier project, municipalities, and the health sector-have also been restored. However, details regarding the specific projects and approved amounts remain unclear. While most government support has been reinstated, funding for civil society projects, transparency initiatives, governance programs, and community development projects has largely been canceled.

AmmanNet has learned that one of the canceled projects is the Sawt program, run by Internews, which supported civil society organizations through media engagement. Another canceled initiative is the Political Governance and Communication Support Program , which was overseen by the International Republican Institute (IRI) . Several other social, humanitarian, and human rights grants have also been completely scrapped.

It is worth noting that in 2022, the United States signed a seven-year cooperation agreement guaranteeing at least $1.45 billion annually in support for governmental and non-governmental projects in Jordan. It remains unclear whether the Trump administration will honor the principles agreed upon with the Biden administration and whether additional aid will be allocated to compensate for the canceled programs.

Meanwhile, the U.S. has yet to appoint a new ambassador to Jordan. The Trump administration declined to renew the tenure of former Ambassador Yael Lambert, who, like all ambassadors, submitted her resignation upon the new president's arrival. While most such resignations are typically rejected, Lambert's was accepted. Currently, Rohit (Ro) Nepal , the Deputy Chief of Mission, is serving as the Chargé d'Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Jordan.
