Russian flamethrowers hit Ukrainian sites

(MENAFN) The Russian Defense Ministry has released footage of TOS-1A Solntsepyok thermobaric rocket systems striking Ukrainian positions at an undisclosed location on the frontline.

According to the ministry, the attack was carried out by Russia’s ‘West’ troop grouping and targeted a platoon-sized Ukrainian entrenchment. The nighttime video shows multiple rockets being launched, with surveillance drone footage capturing precise impacts and concentrated explosions within a small area.

Despite being classified as heavy flamethrowers, TOS-1A systems function as multiple rocket launchers mounted on a tank chassis, firing 220mm thermobaric munitions. These so-called "vacuum bombs" release an explosive cloud of liquid or gas that ignites upon detonation, creating an intense blast wave and extreme temperatures. Such weapons are highly effective against entrenched soldiers, fortifications, and lightly armored vehicles.

The TOS-1A has played a significant role in the Ukraine conflict, delivering short-range but devastating firepower. Additionally, Russia has deployed a lighter, wheeled variant known as the TOS-2 Tosochka, which has been used repeatedly against Ukrainian forces.
