Russian Superjet conducts milestone examination flight

(MENAFN) A prototype of Russia’s domestically produced SJ-100 Superjet has successfully completed its first test flight, marking a significant milestone for the country’s aviation industry, state-owned corporation Rostec announced on Monday.

Amid Western sanctions imposed after the Ukraine conflict escalated in 2022, Russia has intensified efforts to replace foreign-made aircraft components. The SJ-100 program aims to eliminate reliance on imported systems, replacing approximately 40 Western parts with Russian alternatives, including avionics, landing gear, auxiliary power units, and control systems. A key feature of the aircraft is its domestically developed PD-8 engine, designed by the United Engine Corporation.

During the test flight, the Superjet remained airborne for about 40 minutes, reaching speeds of 500 km/h and an altitude of 3,000 meters. Engineers tested the gas-dynamic stability of the PD-8 engines under various conditions, with Rostec confirming that the flight objectives were successfully met.

Rostec CEO Sergey Chemezov highlighted the importance of the achievement, stating that the test flight validated engineering calculations and demonstrated the aircraft’s high readiness. “After 2022, we essentially had to rebuild the Superjet from the ground up. The PD-8 engine is a crucial part of this import substitution initiative—it’s the ‘heart’ of the aircraft,” he noted.

Dmitry Yadrov, head of Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsiya), emphasized the aircraft’s role in reducing dependence on foreign equipment. He projected that Russian air traffic will increase by 1.5 times by 2030, making the SJ-100 a vital component of the country’s expanding aviation sector.

Originally developed with foreign components, the Superjet has undergone significant modifications to become fully domestically produced. This latest milestone brings Russia closer to achieving technological self-sufficiency in its aviation industry.
