Putin displays guarantees Moscow demands for 30-day ceasefire
(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin has voiced support for a proposed 30-day ceasefire in the Ukraine conflict but emphasized the need for clear guarantees to prevent Ukraine from using the truce to its advantage. Speaking alongside Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko in Moscow on Thursday, Putin raised concerns about how the ceasefire would be enforced and its potential impact on ongoing Russian military operations.
“We need assurances that during the ceasefire, Ukraine will not conduct mobilization, train new soldiers, or receive additional weapons,” Putin stated. He warned that halting military actions along Russia’s 2,000-kilometer frontline could allow Ukrainian forces to regroup and strengthen their positions.
Putin also highlighted the difficulty of enforcing a ceasefire over such a vast battlefield, noting that violations could lead to disputes and accusations from both sides. He stressed the need for a system of "control and verification" to ensure compliance.
Addressing the situation in Russia’s Kursk Region, where Ukrainian forces launched an incursion in August 2024, Putin pointed out that most of these troops are now cut off and encircled. He questioned what should be done with them in the event of a ceasefire, given allegations of war crimes.
As of Wednesday, Russian forces had recaptured 86% of the territory seized by Ukraine in August, according to General Valery Gerasimov, head of the Russian General Staff. Ukrainian troops in the area are now largely isolated, he added.
Putin suggested that further discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump would be necessary to establish a workable truce. “We support resolving the conflict through peaceful means,” he stated, while emphasizing the importance of securing fair and enforceable terms.
