Trump explains Ukraine envoy’s obligations

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has officially appointed retired Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg as Special Envoy to Ukraine, tasking him with leading direct negotiations with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and senior officials. Trump announced the decision on Truth Social, emphasizing Kellogg's strong working relationship with Ukrainian leadership.

Reports earlier this week suggested that Kellogg had been removed from US-Russia peace talks at Moscow’s request due to his pro-Kiev stance. However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov denied these claims, stating that Russia does not interfere in Washington’s internal decisions regarding diplomatic appointments.

Kellogg was notably absent from recent negotiations, including the US-Russia talks in Saudi Arabia and the US-Ukraine discussions in Jeddah, where a 30-day ceasefire proposal was put forward. Instead, US special envoy Steve Witkoff traveled to Moscow on Thursday to formally present the initiative to Russian officials. Trump described Witkoff’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin as “very good and productive.”

Putin has expressed conditional support for the proposed ceasefire but raised concerns over its implementation. He also reiterated his offer for Ukrainian forces encircled in Russia’s Kursk Region to surrender, assuring them safe treatment.

Addressing US-Russia relations, Putin acknowledged the Trump administration’s efforts to rebuild ties but described the process as difficult, citing damage caused by the previous US administration.
