South Korea, US Hold Joint Exercises to Counter North Korea's Underground Networks
(MENAFN) On Monday, South Korean and US troops carried out joint exercises aimed at countering North Korea's extensive network of underground military establishments, according to Seoul's army.
The four-day exercises commenced at a training ground in Paju, located about 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) north of Seoul, as both allies seek to bolster their readiness against North Korea's "military threats," South Korean news agency reported.
Around 370 troops participated in the exercises, which are part of the ongoing annual Freedom Shield exercise.
The exercises, headed by the Ground Operations Command, focused on training military forces in warfare tactics specific to North Korean underground bunkers if war erupts.
The drill includes training on using explosives to trap opponents in tunnels and utilizing small drones, such as the US military’s Black Hornet, for scouting missions.
North Korea has consistently criticized the joint drills as rehearsals for an invasion, meanwhile South Korea and the US maintain that the exercises are purely defensive.
The Freedom Shield exercise is projected to conclude on Thursday.
