Forgotten By Dad, 4-Year-Old Boy Dies In Locked Car

Sharjah - A four-year-old Emirati boy has died in the car where he was forgotten by his parents. The car was parked in front of their house located in Al Ramsa area in Sharjah.

The Police said that on receiving information about the incident, they rushed to the house where the boy was found in the car, motionless. The boy was taken to Al Qasimi Hospital already dead.

The child had returned home with his father who, thinking that the boy had already gotten off the car, locked it and went into his villa. The boy died in the car due to suffocation and high temperature.

The Sharjah Police had recently warned parents against leaving children locked in cars with the engines running. A top official said leaving children locked in cars even for five

minutes in the sweltering heat can lead to suffocation, and could prove fatal.

Last year, more than five such cases were reported in Sharjah alone.

Dr Abdul Kareem Helmi, head of the emergency section at the Khalifa Hospital, Ajman, said leaving children unattended in cars can lead to suffocation. He explained that the poisonous carbon monoxide can prove to be very dangerous. "Such incidents happen during hot summers," he said.

Jamal Al Sumaiti, Director of the Judiciary Institute in Dubai, said parents found guilty of leaving their children locked in cars can be sentenced to one to three months in jail.
