US demonstrators call for activist Mahmoud Khalil’s freedom

(MENAFN) On Saturday, demonstrators assembled outside the US Immigration and customs Enforcement (ICE) main office in Washington, DC, calling for the freedom of Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil, who holds a green card and a fresh graduate from Columbia University, Khalil played a key role in arranging demonstrations in the University’s campus in 2024.

The protesters then marched through the streets, chanting slogans such as, “We want justice, you say how. Free Mahmoud Khalil now!” as well as “Free all the students today.” Many demonstrators carried signs saying, “Free Palestine,” “Release Mahmoud Khalil,” along with “ICE off our campuses.”

Similar demonstrations took place in New York City, where participants gathered in Times Square and marched towards Columbus Circle. Emphasizing that Khalil's right to protest is safeguarded by the First Amendment, activists denounced him being detained.

A demonstrator remarked: “Attacks on Mahmoud Khalil are not attacks on one individual, they are an attack on everyone who dares to stand up and speak for justice.”
