Putin weighs in on US efforts to mend two-sided relations

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin has recognized the trump administration’s attempts to rebuild US-Russia relations but noted that the process remains complex.

Speaking at a Security Council meeting on Friday, Putin stated that President Donald Trump’s team is working to restore ties that had been “practically reduced to zero” under the previous US administration. However, he emphasized that the effort is “not easy” and suggested waiting to see its outcome.

Diplomatic relations between Moscow and Washington significantly deteriorated under former US President Joe Biden, with both nations imposing various restrictions, including staff reductions at embassies, banking limitations, and property seizures. Russia has maintained that its countermeasures were a direct response to US actions.

The new US administration has signaled a shift in approach. Trump and Putin held an extended phone call on February 12, followed by high-level meetings between US and Russian delegations in Saudi Arabia and Türkiye to discuss reopening diplomatic channels.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has indicated that Washington is open to restoring economic ties with Moscow once the Ukraine conflict is resolved, while Trump has suggested that sanctions on Russia could be lifted as part of a broader peace agreement.

On Thursday, Putin met with Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, who traveled to Moscow to discuss details from recent US-Ukraine negotiations in Saudi Arabia. Following the Jeddah talks, Washington and Kiev announced a proposed 30-day ceasefire, with the US agreeing to resume military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine.

During a press conference, Putin reiterated that Russia supports a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict and is willing to consider Trump’s ceasefire proposal. However, he stressed the importance of defining clear terms, emphasizing that Moscow seeks a long-term solution rather than a temporary pause in hostilities.
