Extensive power cuts leave millions in the dark in Cuba
(MENAFN) On Friday, a significant power disruption hit Cuba, causing widespread blackouts across the nation resulted by a breakdown at the Diezmero electrical facility in Havana.
The event, which took place about 8:15 p.m. local time (0015GMT), resulted in the breakdown of the National Electric System (SEN), according to the Ministry of energy and Mines.
Cuban officials are operating to reinstate electricity, with smaller power systems already reactivated in multiple regions, featuring Guantanamo, Santiago de Cuba, as well as Holguin, according to Cuba’s Energy Minister Vicente de la O Levy.
The power supplier reported that 110 megawatts are currently being allocated to key establishments, while partial reinstatement efforts are underway in a dozen regions.
Cuba has faced recurring power cuts, primarily caused by outdated infrastructure and ongoing fuel deficit, which have led to frequent power outages impacting extensive areas in the nation.
