Putin announces Russia ready for ceasefire

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed Russia's readiness for a ceasefire in the ongoing Ukraine conflict, emphasizing that such an agreement must lead to lasting peace. Speaking at a joint press conference with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko in Moscow on Thursday, Putin affirmed Russia's support for the idea of a ceasefire and peaceful resolution to the conflict.

However, he noted that certain issues need to be discussed before a truce can be achieved, particularly with the United States. Putin suggested that talks with US President Donald trump might be necessary to address these concerns.

The Russian leader highlighted key points of discussion, such as ensuring effective monitoring and verification systems for the ceasefire, and concerns about Ukraine potentially using the pause to rearm and reinforce its forces. He questioned whether a 30-day ceasefire would lead to continued mobilization and military supplies for Ukraine.

Putin also raised the issue of the Kursk region, asking whether the ceasefire would require the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops who had invaded the area in August 2024, noting the alleged crimes committed by these forces against civilians.

As of Wednesday, Russian forces had reportedly liberated 86% of the territory seized by Ukraine in August 2024, with Ukrainian troops encircled and isolated in the remaining areas.

A 30-day temporary ceasefire was endorsed by the US and Ukraine following talks in Saudi Arabia earlier this week, with US special envoy Steve Witkoff set to present the outcomes of those discussions in Moscow. Putin reiterated that Russia opposes temporary truces, arguing that the underlying causes of the conflict must be addressed for a sustainable resolution.
