Trump pays tribute to 'unique friendship' between Ireland, U.S.


(MENAFN) On Wednesday, Leader Donald trump payed tribute to the "long and unique friendship" exchanged by the United States and Ireland, he also praised the Irish Americans’ offerings to the nation.

Stating at a St. Patrick's Day reception in the East Room, Trump mentioned that the two countries would "always have that friendship, just like we have a great friendship," speaking to Ireland's premier, known in the region as the Taoiseach, Micheal Martin.

"This wonderful tradition dates back to 1952, when the first Irish ambassador to the United States sent President (Harry S.) Truman a box of shamrocks as a gesture of goodwill," Trump added. "The bond between our nations is as old as America itself,” he also stated.

“So many Irish volunteers risked their lives in the American Revolution that George Washington described Ireland as 'the friend of my country in my country's most friendless day.'"

Trump stated that 50 percent of all beneficiaries of the Congressional Medal of Honor were Irish, and also underlined the support of popular Irish Americans, such as Leaders Andrew Jackson as well as Ronald Reagan, Walt Disney’s entertainment legend, and novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald along with automobile manufacturer giant Henry Ford.
