Russian intel announces UK looking to ridicule Trump’s Ukraine peace attempts
(MENAFN) The UK is actively working to disrupt US President Donald Trump’s attempts to negotiate a peace deal in the Ukraine conflict, according to Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR).
Since taking office in January, Trump has sought to improve relations with Moscow. A diplomatic summit in Riyadh last month marked the first high-level engagement between the US and Russia since Washington severed ties in 2022 following the escalation of the Ukraine war.
In a statement shared with RT on Monday, the SVR claimed that British officials see US-Russia peace talks as a threat to their broader strategy of keeping Moscow in check. The UK reportedly fears that a potential settlement could weaken its influence over Ukraine and derail efforts to create an anti-Russian "buffer zone" in Eastern Europe, as well as plans to impose a naval blockade on Russia.
The SVR also suggested that London is frustrated with Trump for prioritizing direct engagement with Moscow while sidelining traditional allies. The agency pointed to an incident during British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s recent visit to Washington, where he reportedly sought security guarantees for Ukraine in any ceasefire agreement. At a joint press conference, Trump allegedly asked whether the UK could stand against Russia on its own—a remark said to have unsettled Starmer.
According to the SVR, British authorities have made it a priority to undermine Trump’s Ukraine peace initiatives. It claimed that UK media and NGOs have been instructed to discredit Trump, portraying him as ineffective in peacekeeping and susceptible to Russian influence.
Tensions between the US and Ukraine have escalated in recent months. Trump and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky reportedly had a heated exchange at the White House in February during negotiations over a proposed agreement granting the US access to Ukraine’s rare-earth minerals. Trump accused Zelensky of “gambling with World War III” by refusing to engage in peace talks with Russia, leading to the deal being put on hold.
The SVR suggested that the Starmer government is attempting to reinforce Ukraine’s position against US pressure by ramping up arms supplies. However, it noted that British officials privately acknowledge this strategy may not be sustainable without continued American support.
Moscow has strongly opposed any Western military deployment in Ukraine, warning that foreign troops would be considered legitimate targets unless authorized by a UN mandate. The Russian Foreign Ministry has also accused the UK and the EU of adopting an increasingly militaristic stance.
