US ends Iraq sanctions waiver for Iranian energy imports

(MENAFN) On Sunday, US National Security Advisor Michael Waltz told Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani in a phone call that Washington has considered terminating a key sanctions waiver that had allowed Iraq to purchase gas and electricity from Iran.

The Iraqi Prime Minister’s Press Office reported that, during the call, Waltz framed the decision as a component of President Donald Trump’s "maximum pressure" strategy, which seeks to curb Iraq’s reliance on Iranian energy supplies.

Waltz stated during the phone call: "The decision to end the waiver for Iranian-supplied (gas and) electricity aligns with the Maximum Pressure Policy, emphasizing the need for bilateral coordination to mitigate any potential impact on Iraq’s stability," as reported by the press office.

For years, Iraq has heavily counted on Iranian energy imports to sustain its power grid, especially throughout the peak summer months when domestic productivity is insufficient. Washington had earlier issued exemptions that enabled Iraq to continue these purchases without violating US sanctions on Iran. However, with this most recent policy shift, the US is intensifying efforts to push Iraq toward decreasing its reliance on Iranian energy sources.
