Musk describes Starlink as ‘backbone’ of Ukrainian army
(MENAFN) The Ukrainian military is entirely dependent on Starlink for communication, and shutting it down would lead to the collapse of the country’s entire frontline, SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk has claimed.
In a post on X on Sunday, Musk stated that Starlink is essential to Ukraine’s military operations. “Their entire front line would collapse if I turned it off,” he wrote, adding that the conflict has reached a stalemate and that peace must be pursued immediately. “What I am sickened by is years of slaughter in a stalemate that Ukraine will inevitably lose. Anyone who really cares, really thinks, and really understands wants the meat grinder to stop.”
In late February, Reuters reported that Musk had considered cutting off Ukraine’s Starlink access to give Washington leverage in negotiations over natural resources. Musk denied the claims, accusing the news outlet of fabricating the story.
Since the escalation of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022, SpaceX has supplied Ukraine with over 40,000 Starlink terminals, which have become a crucial component of the country’s military communication and control systems. Beyond standard communication, the terminals have been integrated into Ukrainian drones—both aerial and maritime—providing them with stable, hard-to-jam control links.
Additionally, SpaceX has granted Ukraine access to Starshield, a more secure and militarized version of Starlink. According to Bloomberg, the company secured a contract with the Pentagon late last year, expanding Starshield access to an additional 3,000 Starlink terminals in Ukraine.
