Trump affirms US will attain Greenland ‘one way or the other’

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has once again expressed his desire for the United States to take control of Greenland, stating during a congressional address on Tuesday that America will obtain the territory “one way or the other.”

Denmark has repeatedly rejected US proposals to purchase Greenland and dismissed claims that local residents support such a move. However, Trump argued that the island is crucial for both national and global security and emphasized his support for Greenlanders' right to self-determination.

“The US can offer Greenlanders safety and prosperity—taking life on the island to heights never imagined before,” Trump claimed.

Greenland, a strategically located Arctic territory, is currently under Danish control, granting Copenhagen rights to its natural resources under international law. The US has maintained a military base on the island since World War II.

While Trump did not explicitly suggest the use of force, he has not ruled out alternative methods of acquiring Greenland.

In response, Denmark has pledged increased funding for Greenland’s economic development and cultural programs. Meanwhile, European NATO members have proposed deploying a joint mission to strengthen the island’s ties with the alliance.
