Arab Leaders Approve $53 Billion Gaza Reconstruction Plan, Reject Forced Displacement

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) In a recent emergency summit held in Cairo, Arab leaders approved a comprehensive $53 billion plan for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip. The plan was a direct response to the controversial proposal by U.S. President Donald Trump, which suggested forcibly relocating Palestinians from Gaza to neighboring countries and reconstructing the area under U.S. control. The Arab leaders' plan aims to maintain the Palestinian presence in their homeland while rebuilding Gaza after the devastating war.

During the summit, the Egyptian-proposed plan for Gaza's reconstruction was debated and ultimately approved. The initiative includes transferring temporary control of Gaza to a“management committee” under the Palestinian government, which will consist of qualified technocrats. This shift excludes Hamas, which has ruled Gaza since 2007, and might be seen as a step toward appeasing both the U.S. and Western nations.

Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the Secretary-General of the Arab League, emphasized that the Arab position rejects any form of forced or voluntary displacement of Palestinians from Gaza. He firmly stated that the Egyptian plan is now the official Arab stance. This initiative underscores the Arab commitment to ensuring the Palestinians' right to remain on their land.

The plan also includes a proposal to follow through with the“two-state solution,” which would be pursued in parallel with Gaza's reconstruction. However, this aspect of the plan could face strong opposition from both Israel and the U.S. No European countries have presented a clear solution for the two-state proposal as of now.

Egypt's reconstruction plan for Gaza includes a brochure showcasing a vision of the area without the destruction, focusing on its potential rebirth. The plan proposes creating an independent Palestinian committee to manage Gaza's affairs during the transitional period. This committee will be made up of Palestinian technocrats and operate under the oversight of the Palestinian Authority, effectively sidelining Hamas.

The plan calls for a financial fund of $53 billion to cover Gaza's reconstruction costs. Significant contributions are expected from Arab countries, particularly the Gulf Cooperation Council members like Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar. Additionally, the international community is anticipated to participate in the funding and rebuilding efforts.

To ensure security, the plan includes deploying an international stabilization force in Gaza, composed of Arab countries, under the supervision of the United Nations. This force would prevent unilateral actions by any party involved in the conflict.

The Arab leaders' plan for Gaza emphasizes the right of Palestinians to stay in their homeland, rejecting any form of displacement. With a focus on rebuilding critical infrastructure and improving connections between Gaza and the West Bank, this initiative seeks to create a path toward a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders.
