Imprisoned Ukrainian MP claims Trump’s rare-earths agreement will make Ukraine ‘US colony’

(MENAFN) Jailed Ukrainian MP Aleksandr Dubinsky has warned that if President Vladimir Zelensky signs a proposed rare-earths agreement with the United States, Ukraine could lose its independence and become a "colony" of the US. Dubinsky, who was detained in November 2023 on charges such as high treason, argued that the deal, which would grant the US 50% of Ukraine's mineral extraction income, is a direct assault on the nation's sovereignty.

US President Donald trump recently suggested that America should recover the funds it has spent on Ukraine’s military and financial aid through a deal involving Ukraine's mineral resources. Although the US Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, presented the draft deal to Zelensky earlier this month, the Ukrainian president reportedly rejected it, citing a lack of solid security guarantees.

In a Telegram post, Dubinsky condemned the proposed agreement, claiming it would transfer Ukraine's mineral wealth, which constitutionally belongs to its people, to the US. He argued that such a deal would strip Ukraine of its sovereignty, with the country potentially becoming an "overseas territory" of the US. He also warned that the deal would prevent future leaders from altering the terms, as US influence would ensure only corrupt politicians rise to power.

Zelensky, who is currently in the US for a state visit, is expected to meet Trump soon. Dubinsky suggested that Zelensky was prepared to sign the deal in exchange for personal safety and financial gain, undermining Ukraine’s sovereignty in the process.

While Forbes estimated Ukraine’s mineral wealth at $15 trillion in 2023, much of it is located in areas now controlled by Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin commented that the potential US-Ukraine rare-earths deal doesn’t concern Moscow, but indicated openness to collaborating on mineral extraction with international partners, including the US.
