Millions of Somalis are exposed to starvation due to drought, war
(MENAFN) The Somali government as well as UN support agencies cautioned on Wednesday that 4.4 million individuals are exposed to starvation by April 2025 because of the intensified drought, war, as well as growing food costs in the Horn of Africa region.
“Worsening drought poses a severe threat to communities already grappling with immense hardship and ongoing conflict. Urgent action is required to save lives, protect livelihoods, and prevent further suffering,” Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) Commissioner Mohamuud Moallim stated in a shared declaration with multiple other UN agencies.
He explained that this time, they are not just facing the destructive effects of drought but growing threats as well, such as war as well as an unusual decrease in humanitarian financial support.
“These overlapping crises demand immediate, collective, and well-coordinated action to strengthen Somalia’s resilience and safeguard our most vulnerable communities.”
The caution was declared by the Somali Disaster Management Agency, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), as well as the United Nations World Food Programme.
