Hidrovias Do Brasil Faces R$ 446 Million Loss Amid Water Crisis And Currency Pressures

(MENAFN- The Rio Times) Hidrovias do Brasil S.A., a major player in Brazil's waterway logistics, reported a net loss of R$ 446 million ($74 million) in the fourth quarter of 2024, up from R$ 192 million ($32 million) in the same period of 2023.

This steep decline reflects the impact of operational challenges, currency fluctuations, and one-off expenses, offering critical insights into risks facing waterway-dependent industries.

A historic drought severely disrupted operations, particularly in the Southern Corridor, where low-water levels restricted navigation. This led to a 23% drop in revenue to R$ 265 million ($44 million) as cargo volumes fell, with iron ore shipments hit hardest.

Despite reducing operational costs by 19% to R$ 210 million ($35 million), Hidrovias struggled to offset these losses. Currency volatility compounded the situation. The company recorded a non-cash expense of R$ 396 million ($66 million) due to the appreciation of the U.S. dollar.

This increase in the dollar value raised the company's dollar-denominated debt. With 79% of its total liabilities tied to foreign currency, Hidrovias remains highly exposed to exchange rate risks.

By year-end, net debt climbed to R$ 3.75 billion ($625 million) from R$ 3.20 billion ($533 million) a year earlier, pushing its leverage ratio to 6.6 times adjusted EBITDA from 4.2 times.

Non-recurring events added further pressure. The company wrote off R$ 90 million ($15 million) for "HB Potiguar," a vessel initially intended for salt operations but later deemed unviable.

Hidrovias' results highlight vulnerabilities tied to environmental conditions and financial exposure. This raises concerns for investors and policymakers about the resilience of waterway logistics amid climate change and currency fluctuations.

Addressing these challenges will be crucial for its long-term stability and for stakeholders reliant on Brazil's waterborne transportation network.
