Macron labels Algerian’s stabbing spree in France as ‘terrorism’
(MENAFN) An Algerian man went on a stabbing spree in Mulhouse, France, on Saturday afternoon, leaving one person dead and two others injured, according to local media reports. The attack occurred during a demonstration supporting Congo, where a security perimeter was in place. The suspect, a 37-year-old Algerian, was reportedly required to leave France and had a ten-year judicial ban from the country. At the time of the incident, he was supposed to report to the police station for a routine check on his house arrest but refused to do so.
Witnesses claimed they heard the phrase "Allahu Akbar" during the attack. The suspect was also listed on the French terror watchlist, FSPRT, which monitors individuals suspected of radicalization. Municipal police officers who responded to the attack were injured as well, and the Mulhouse mayor, Michele Lutz, confirmed that terrorism was currently considered the primary lead in the investigation.
France's national anti-terror prosecutor unit (PNAT) has taken over the case, with President Emmanuel Macron stating that this attack is considered an Islamist terrorist act. Macron expressed solidarity with the victims' families and affirmed France's determination to take all necessary actions in response.
