Russia enhances bonds with fresh BRICS member
(MENAFN) A high-level Russian delegation, led by Valentina Matviyenko, chairperson of the Federation Council, is visiting Ethiopia for a three-day trip, engaging in discussions with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali. The delegation also includes top officials like Maxim Reshetnikov, Russia’s Minister of Economic Development, Mikhail Murashko, Minister of Health, and other representatives from key Russian institutions, including Rosatom and the Russian Academy of Sciences.
During the visit, Matviyenko delivered greetings from Russian President Vladimir Putin, reaffirming Russia’s commitment to building a long-term, productive relationship with Ethiopia. She emphasized the importance of Ethiopia as a key partner in Africa, highlighting their historical ties and mutual cooperation.
The main goal of the visit is to strengthen ties between the legislative branches of both nations, streamline legal processes, and promote the ratification of bilateral agreements. The delegation is also working to enhance trade and economic relations, with trade turnover having increased more than fourfold in 2024. Russian businesses are particularly interested in Ethiopia’s energy, health, and agricultural sectors, as well as nuclear energy projects.
Matviyenko invited Ethiopia’s leadership to participate in the 80th-anniversary celebrations of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War in Moscow on May 9. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed or President Taye Atske Selassie is expected to attend.
The visit also highlighted the shared values between Russia and Ethiopia, especially regarding sovereignty and independence. Matviyenko praised Ethiopia’s strong stance on the international stage, noting that its recent accession to BRICS marks a significant milestone and opens up further opportunities for collaboration in global forums such as the UN.
