China proposes holding Putin-Trump summit

(MENAFN) China has proposed hosting a summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump to help resolve the ongoing Ukraine conflict, according to the Wall Street Journal. The offer follows a recent phone call between the two leaders, their first confirmed conversation since Trump returned to the White House. During the call, they agreed to initiate immediate negotiations aimed at ending the conflict.

China has long positioned itself as a potential peace mediator in the dispute, offering its own roadmap for resolution. The proposal, presented through intermediaries to the Trump administration, suggests a summit without Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky's participation—contrary to Western expectations that Kiev should be involved in all peace discussions. While the White House did not confirm receiving the offer, it rejected it as “not viable,” and the Chinese Foreign Ministry declined to comment, only expressing satisfaction with the strengthening of US-Russia ties.

Trump and Putin also agreed to visit each other's countries, with Putin inviting Trump to Moscow, though no specific timeline has been set. Trump later indicated that their first meeting would likely take place in Saudi Arabia.

The Ukraine peace talks have stalled since the early stages of the conflict in 2022, with negotiations in Belarus and Türkiye collapsing after both sides accused each other of making unrealistic demands.
