Ex- top US representative says Putin-Trump discussions ‘good news’ for Ukraine
(MENAFN) A phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump has set the stage for potential peace in Ukraine, according to political analyst Steve Gill. Speaking to RT, Gill, who previously served as the director of intergovernmental affairs for the US trade representative, described the call as a "significant" first step toward resolving the Ukraine conflict and improving US-Russia relations.
The call, which was the first direct conversation between sitting US and Russian leaders in three years, primarily focused on Ukraine. Both leaders agreed to begin negotiations immediately, with the possibility of a future face-to-face meeting. Gill emphasized that while this was just the beginning, the willingness of both sides to engage could pave the way for a more peaceful and prosperous future for both nations.
Gill also noted that Trump's eagerness to resume contact with Moscow could encourage other Western leaders to follow suit, as they do not want to be left behind in a shifting diplomatic landscape. He pointed out that the call coincided with US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s remarks that Washington would not support Ukraine joining NATO or returning to its 2014 borders in a peace deal, both of which are key Russian demands.
Gill argued that moving NATO membership off the table makes it easier to resolve the conflict with Russia, and with multiple diplomatic developments unfolding quickly, he sees this as "good news" for the future of the region.
