UK health minister, Labour MPs booted due to ‘sexist and racist’ remarks

(MENAFN) UK health Minister Andrew Gwynne and several Labour MPs have been dismissed following a scandal involving offensive and abusive messages leaked from a constituency WhatsApp chat group. Gwynne was sacked on Saturday after media reports exposed sexist and racist comments he made in the group “Trigger Me Timbers,” which included Labour councilors, party officials, and other MPs.

The Gorton and Denton MP allegedly made anti-Semitic remarks and joked about a pensioner, wishing she would die before the next election. One message reportedly suggested that a local councilor respond rudely to a pensioner’s complaint about bin collections, with a disturbing comment about her possibly dying before the elections.

In addition to Gwynne, three Labour councilors—Claire Reid, Jack Naylor, and George Newton—and MP Oliver Ryan, who had been Gwynne’s assistant, also resigned and were suspended by the party. Gwynne was also accused of making racist remarks about Labour MP Diane Abbott, sexist comments about Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, and jokes about a constituent being “mown down” by a truck.

British Housing Minister Matthew Pennycook condemned the remarks as “unacceptable,” praising the swift action by Labour leader Keir Starmer to uphold high public office standards. Gwynne expressed regret for his “badly misjudged comments” and apologized for any offense caused.

The scandal has added to a decline in Labour’s popularity, with recent polls showing growing support for Nigel Farage’s right-wing Reform UK party ahead of the next general election.
