U.S. Shifts Responsibility for Ukraine Conflict to European Allies, Trump Administration Says
(MENAFN) The trump administration has made it clear that there are no plans to deploy American troops to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, according to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Instead, the U.S. aims to shift the responsibility of supporting Ukraine onto European nations.
Hegseth’s comments came on Tuesday, just ahead of a key meeting between U.S. envoy Keith Kellogg and European officials at the Munich Security Conference (MSC) on Friday, where they will discuss President Trump's proposed strategy.
“At the Ukraine contact group and the NATO ministerial, we’re going to have straight talk with our friends,” Hegseth said during a press briefing in Germany.
“It ought to be those in the neighborhood investing the most in that collective and individual defense,” he emphasized. He also noted that the U.S. wants NATO countries to exceed the current 2 percent GDP defense spending target. “We believe that needs to be higher. The president has said 5 percent.”
