Over 70 Countries Reaffirm Support for ICC Amid US Sanctions Over Gaza War Crimes Investigation

(MENAFN) More than 70 countries, including France, Germany, the UK, and the Netherlands, reaffirmed their backing for the International Criminal Court (ICC) on Friday, following US sanctions imposed on the court for investigating potential Israeli war crimes in the Gaza Strip.

In a joint statement, the state parties to the Rome Statute expressed their "continued and unwavering support for the independence, impartiality, and integrity of the ICC." They emphasized that the ICC "serves as a vital pillar of the international justice system by ensuring accountability for the most serious international crimes, and justice for victims."

The statement also addressed the sanctions imposed on the court, its officials, and those cooperating with it, noting that these measures were introduced in response to the ICC fulfilling its mandate under the Rome Statute. The signatories warned that such sanctions "increase the risk of impunity for the most serious crimes and threaten to erode the international rule of law," which is essential for maintaining global order and security.
