Rabat, Morocco: Bronte Law has not devised any special strategy to defend her crown in the Lalla Meryem golf Cup, teeing off today at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam's Blue Course.

The highly anticipated event, carrying prize money of €450,000, will kickstart the 30-event Ladies European Tour (LET) season for the 13th consecutive year.

Law clinched last year's title after a brilliant fightback, carding nine-under-par 64 in the final round to overpower France's Pauline Roussin-Bouchard and Spain's Fatima Fernandez Cano.

This year's 28th Lalla Meryem Cup will see a strong field, with a total of 108 golfers from 34 nations battling for top honours. Among the main contenders are LET Order of Merit winners, Switzerland's Chiara Tamburlini (2024) and Thailand's Trichat Cheenglab (2023). The field also features past champions Klara Davidson Spilkova (2017) and Nuria Iturrioz (2016, 2019).

Law, a three-time winner on the LET, expects a strong challenge but will approach the tournament as a defending champion just like any other event.

“The danger for a lot of people is when you get to a tournament, you start doing things differently. I'll just do everything the same that I usually do and I'm looking forward to being back out on the course,” said Law, who is returning to action after a break, during a media interaction ahead of the event.

After winning the season-opening Lalla Meryem Cup, the English golfer had a fine season and now she aims to capitalise on her form in 2024.

“There's lots of positives to take away. I really enjoyed playing a full season on the LET. I also finished fifth in the Order of Merit, so I felt like I had a good year,” said the 29-year-old as she seeks further improvement in the new season.

“There's always things you could have done better, but it was a year of learning, trying to capitalise on experiences and being a better player. They're successes on and off the golf course, and I'm looking forward to building on that, and bringing that momentum into this year,” she added.

Law said she relishes playing in Rabat, which also hosts the PGA Tour Champions Hassan II Golf Trophy simultaneously at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam's Red Course, bringing together golf legends.

The field also features past champions Nuria Iturrioz (left) and Klara Davidson Spilkova.

“It's great to be back at this event, and I think it's such a unique tournament being alongside the PGA Champions Tour. Everyone loves the interaction with the other players on the range and in the Players Lounge. It's such a good opportunity and experience for our younger players. We need to continue to push forward to create these unique spectacles, and this event is certainly one of those. I think everyone on the LET is really excited about this,” she said.

Meanwhile, LET Director of Operations Diane Barnard, who won the inaugural edition in 1997, echoed Law's views as she anticipated exciting action in the event.

“It feels like yesterday when we started this event. The Lalla Meryem Cup is growing bigger and once again it has attracted top players. We are looking forward to a fabulous week of golf and a great start to the season,” said Barnard.
