KSA evaluates its potential membership in BRICS bloc

(MENAFN) Saudi Arabia is currently evaluating its potential membership in the BRICS bloc, according to Faisal Al-Ibrahim, the country’s Minister of Economy and Planning. In an interview with Bloomberg on Monday, Al-Ibrahim stated that the kingdom had been invited to join BRICS, but is carefully considering various factors before making a decision. He emphasized Saudi Arabia's focus on promoting global dialogue, noting that the nation had been invited to numerous multilateral platforms in the past.

BRICS, originally formed in 2009 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, expanded to include South Africa in 2011. Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE officially became full members in January 2024, with Indonesia set to join in January 2025. Saudi Arabia, along with several other countries, received an invitation to join the group during the 15th BRICS summit in August 2023.

Al-Ibrahim’s comments come amid growing global interest in the economic bloc, which has recently granted ‘partner state’ status to countries such as Belarus, Bolivia, and Kazakhstan. This status allows countries to participate in BRICS events and contribute to outcomes but excludes them from voting or approving official documents.
