Media reports US federal employees instructed to delete pronouns from email signatures

(MENAFN) US federal employees have been instructed to remove pronouns from their email signatures, according to internal memos obtained by media outlets. The directive aligns with two presidential executive orders aimed at curbing diversity and equity programs within the government.

On his first day back in office, President Donald trump repealed 78 executive orders signed by his predecessor, Joe Biden, including several that protected transgender rights and promoted diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The orders also imposed a 60-day deadline for federal agencies to end DEI-related practices.

The memos, which set a Friday afternoon deadline, instructed employees at agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to remove pronouns and any other information deemed unnecessary. Similar directives were also issued to staff at the Department of Energy and Department of Transportation, urging the removal of DEI language in federal communications.

In addition, several federal agency websites, including the Federal Aviation Administration and Census Bureau, temporarily went down, with some pages displaying as blank before returning later in the day. The Bureau of Prisons also renamed a webpage on “inmate gender” to “inmate sex,” removing references to transgender inmates.

Trump’s policies now officially recognize only two genders, and a new order requires federal agencies to revise official documents, such as passports and visas, to reflect this stance.
