ERBIL, Feb 2 (KUNA) -- The Erbil Civilization Museum, which houses rare artifacts dating back thousands of years, from the Stone Age to the Sumerian, Assyrian, and Islamic periods, stands as a testament to the historical and cultural heritage of Mesopotamia.
The museum displays nearly a thousand rare pieces across three halls. The first hall is dedicated to artifacts from the Stone Age, some of which were discovered in the Shanidar Cave in Erbil. The second hall displays Assyrian artifacts and others, while the third hall focuses on Islamic-era artifacts, including many items from the Abbasid period and other Islamic dynasties.
Located in a historically significant site in the city, the museum's origins trace back to the 1980s and is managed by the Erbil Directorate of Antiquities and Heritage.
It is a major archaeological and tourist attraction, visited by many tourists annually.
Plans are in place, in collaboration with an Italian designer, to expand the museum. (end)
