Coca-Cola recalls products in Europe over chlorate contamination

(MENAFN) Global beverage company Coca-Cola has issued a recall of several products in certain European countries after detecting elevated levels of chlorate. The recall was announced by the Belgian Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (FASFC), which identified the affected products as those manufactured between November 23 and December 3, 2024.

The recalled products include popular Coca-Cola brands such as Coca-Cola, Fanta, Sprite, Fuze Tea, Nalu, Minute Maid, Tropico, and Royal Bliss. These beverages, available in both cans and glass bottles, can be identified by production codes ranging from 328 GE to 338 GE. The FASFC has advised consumers to avoid consuming these drinks and instead return them to the point of purchase for a refund or exchange.

The affected products were manufactured at Coca-Cola’s facility in Ghent, Belgium. While Belgium is the primary focus of the recall, shipments of the contaminated beverages were also distributed to neighboring countries, including the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Luxembourg, broadening the scope of the issue.

Chlorate contamination can occur when chlorine-based disinfectants are used during water treatment and food processing. This recall underscores the importance of stringent safety measures in the food and beverage industry to ensure consumer health and confidence.
