A team from the state health department began a survey in the villages on Tuesday after the issue came to light. They have started medical treatment for the affected people, said Shegaon health officer Dr Deepali Bahekar.

According to the health department, as many as 30 people from Kalvad, Bondgaon, and Hingna villages in Shegaon taluka were found to be suffering from hair loss and baldness during the survey.

The department has also initiated medical treatment for the patients based on their symptoms, and advice from skincare specialists is being sought, Bahekar added.

Water samples from the three villages have been sent for testing to check for possible contamination.

Why do some people's hair and nails grow quicker?

When left unchecked, our hair and nails can grow to impressive lengths.

Hair and nails are mostly made from keratin. Both grow from matrix cells below the skin and through different patterns of cell division.

Nails grow steadily from the matrix cells, which sit under the skin at the base of the nail. These cells divide, pushing the older cells forward. As they grow, the new cells slide along the nail bed – the flat area under the fingernail, which looks pink because of its rich blood supply.

Hair also starts growing from the matrix cells, eventually forming the visible part of the hair – the shaft. The hair shaft grows from a root that sits under the skin and is wrapped in a sac known as the hair follicle.
