Iran wishes for ties with Syria to proceed after coup

(MENAFN) Iran's Foreign Ministry expressed hope that relations with Syria would continue, following the recent takeover of Damascus by jihadist forces, which marked the end of President Bashar Assad's 24-year rule. In a statement released on Sunday, Tehran emphasized that Syria's future should be decided by its people, free from foreign interference.

Tehran reaffirmed its commitment to international efforts, particularly those outlined in UN Resolution 2254, which calls for a peaceful resolution to the Syrian conflict through free elections and a new constitution. Iran also voiced its support for an immediate end to military hostilities, the prevention of terrorism, and the initiation of inclusive talks involving all parts of Syrian society to form a new government.

Highlighting Syria’s strategic importance in the West Asian region, Iran reiterated its ongoing support for the country and vowed to continue working with all key regional players to ensure security and stability. The statement also called for the protection of all citizens and religious sites in accordance with international law.

Earlier, video footage surfaced showing looters ransacking the Iranian Embassy in Damascus after the jihadist takeover. Iranian officials also called for the safeguarding of diplomatic missions amid the unfolding crisis.

Meanwhile, Moscow confirmed that President Assad had stepped down and left Syria following negotiations with the insurgent groups, acknowledging Assad's decision to transfer power peacefully, though Russia itself was not involved in the talks.
