UN Special Rapporteur on Palestine emphasizes urgent need to take action, halt Israel's ongoing "brutality" in Gaza Strip
(MENAFN) Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on Palestine, emphasized the urgent need to take action and halt Israel's ongoing "brutality" in the Gaza Strip. She made these remarks during her speech at a conference at the University of Vienna on Friday, titled "The Israeli War: Ethnic Colonial Cleansing."
Albanese condemned Israel's actions in Gaza, describing them as war crimes and crimes against humanity. She argued that the situation in Gaza should not simply be classified as a war, as it involves total destruction without regard for the rules of war.
Since October 7, 2023, with support from the United States, Israel has been accused of committing genocide in Gaza, resulting in over 150,000 Palestinian casualties, the majority of whom are women and children. Additionally, more than 11,000 people are reported missing amid widespread destruction and famine, creating one of the worst humanitarian crises in history.
Despite two arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court on November 21 against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Galant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza, Israel continues its military actions. The country is also disregarding a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire and defying the International Court of Justice's orders to prevent further genocide and alleviate Gaza's humanitarian crisis.
