Microsoft faces £1B (USD1.25B) UK lawsuit over alleged windows server overcharges

(MENAFN) Microsoft has been hit with a £1 billion (USD1.25B) lawsuit in the UK, alleging that it overcharged businesses for Windows Server licenses used on rival cloud platforms like AWS, Google Cloud Platform, and Alibaba Cloud.

Filed in the UK’s Competition Appeal Tribunal by competition lawyer Maria Luisa Stasi through the law firm Scott+Scott, the claim represents thousands of UK businesses and organizations that reportedly paid inflated prices for Windows Server licenses. The lawsuit seeks compensation for these alleged overcharges, which collectively amount to £1 billion (USD1.25B).

"Put simply, Microsoft is punishing UK businesses and organisations for using Google, Amazon, and Alibaba for cloud computing by forcing them to pay more money for Windows Server," stated Stasi, the legal representative for the claimants.

Although specific details of the alleged overcharges are yet to be disclosed, Scott+Scott claims the extra costs made hosting on competing platforms more expensive than transitioning to Microsoft’s Azure cloud. The Tribunal is currently reviewing the case.
