Russia, US exchange accusations of supporting "terrorism" as violence in Syria escalate

(MENAFN) During a UN Security Council meeting on Tuesday, Russia and the United States exchanged accusations of supporting "terrorism" as violence in Syria escalated.

Last week, Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham, a group formerly known as Jabhat al-Nusra and once linked to al-Qaeda before breaking ties in 2016, took control of Aleppo. The group is under UN Security Council sanctions.

Robert Wood, the Deputy U.S. Ambassador to the UN, called for a de-escalation of the fighting in Syria and highlighted concerns over the attack led by Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham. He accused the Syrian and Russian forces of causing civilian casualties through attacks on schools and hospitals. Wood also argued that while Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham is designated as a terrorist group by the U.S. and the UN, this did not justify the actions of the Syrian government and its Russian supporters.

In response, Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzia criticized Wood for not denouncing terrorist attacks by rebel groups. Wood fired back, accusing Russia of supporting regimes that back terrorism globally, asserting that the U.S. has been combating terrorism for decades and will continue its efforts.
