COP29 Hosts Session On Migration Issues Caused By Climate Change On Sidelines Of Parliamentary Meeting (PHOTO)

BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 17. The session
titled "Navigating Human Mobility and Climate Change: Addressing
Climate-Induced Migration and Displacement" has officially kicked
off in Baku as part of the COP29 Parliamentary Meeting organized
jointly by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and Azerbaijani
Parliament, Trend
reports.
The session will focus on the increasing trend of migration and
population displacement due to the intensifying impacts of climate
change.
The discussions will explore how parliaments can address the
root causes of migration and displacement, along with promoting
strategies to protect displaced persons and migrants.
The session will also examine the connections between climate
and human security, particularly in situations where countries face
the risk of disappearing due to climate change.
Vice President of the IPU from Azerbaijan, MP Sevil Mikayilova,
is also participating in the COP29 Parliamentary Meeting.
The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN
Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which will run
until November 22, opened at the Baku Olympic Stadium on November
11.
The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement
signed at the Rio Earth Summit in June 1992 to prevent dangerous
human interference in the climate system. The acronym COP
(Conference of Parties) stands for“Conference of Parties” and is
the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the
Framework Convention on Climate Change.
A total of 198 countries are parties to the Convention. Unless
otherwise decided by the parties, COP is held annually. The first
COP event was held in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is
located in Bonn.
