Amman, October 17 (Petra) -- Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and Expatriates Ayman Safadi met on Thursday with Romanian Foreign Minister Luminita-Teodora Odobescu to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and addressing the dangerous regional escalation threatening to draw the region into a full-scale war.
Both ministers emphasized the importance of expanding cooperation in various sectors, including education, trade, agriculture, and defense. They agreed to renew the bilateral agreement on the cultural and educational cooperation program between Jordan and Romania for another four years, allocating 26 scholarships for Jordanian students in medicine, along with additional scholarships in other scientific fields.
Safadi and Odobescu also agreed to boost collaboration in areas such as food security, agriculture, fertilizer industries, and cybersecurity, with plans to sign a memorandum of understanding in the first quarter of next year.
Additionally, they announced preparations for a bilateral economic committee meeting in mid-2024, aimed at encouraging investment and strengthening ties between Jordanian and Romanian business communities. They also agreed on future agreements in tourism and labor to promote mutual interests, while enhancing cooperation in defense, crisis management, and nursing.
The discussions also focused on the escalating situation in the region, with Safadi underscoring that halting the aggression on Gaza, Lebanon, and the dangerous Israeli escalation in the occupied West Bank is essential to preventing a broader regional war.
The ministers also discussed increasing humanitarian efforts to support Gaza and Lebanon.
Safadi expressed appreciation for Romania's continued support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and its recognition of the State of Palestine, as well as its commitment to the two-state solution as a path toward peace, security, and stability in the region.
The two ministers underlined the potential for further cooperation and stressed the need to continue consultations to identify priority sectors. They also reiterated the importance of collaboration within the framework of the European Union.
