BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 11. Pre-COP29 is an
opportunity to start a real dialogue and achieve results, Italy's
special envoy on climate change Francesco Corvaro told Trend at the
pre-COP29 meeting of the conference of the Parties to the United
Nations Framework convention on Climate Change, Trend reports.
“Since COP29 is focused on climate financing, and I understand
it is not a simple issue, it is really significant for the agenda
of climate change. This is the reason it's so important to start a
conversation among the several parties here at Pre-COP29,” he
said.
According to him, Pre-COP29 is a golden opportunity for all
parties to keep the lines of communication open, find common
ground, and gear up for the upcoming COP29 with results that really
pack a punch.
He also pointed out that Azerbaijan and Italy are joining forces
in the energy sector to cut down on the impact of energy
challenges, while also cooking up new technologies and renewable
energy sources.
“This is a significant potential for both our organization and
companies in Azerbaijan to expand and establish a genuine framework
for international collaboration,” Corvaro added.
Baku is hosting the pre-conference meeting for the Conference of
the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate
Change (UNFCCC), known as Pre-COP29, which occurs before the
climate summit.
Pre-COP29 in Baku is held under the motto“Raising Ambition and
Ensuring Action.”
The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN
Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will be held this
November in Azerbaijan. The decision was made at the plenary
meeting of COP28 held in Dubai on December 11 last year. Within two
weeks, Baku will become the center of the world and will host about
70,000-80,000 foreign guests.
The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement
signed at the Rio Earth Summit in June 1992 to prevent dangerous
human interference in the climate system. The acronym COP
(Conference of Parties) stands for“Conference of Parties” and is
the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the
Framework Convention on Climate Change.
A total of 198 countries are parties to the Convention. Unless
otherwise decided by the parties, COP is held annually. The first
COP event was held in March 1995 in Germany's Berlin with its
secretariat in Bonn.
