BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 6. Work is underway
on a new climate strategy in Azerbaijan, COP29 President,
Azerbaijani Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Mukhtar
Babayev said during the Law & Climate International conference in
Baku today, Trend
reports.
"Serious steps are being taken on the path to sustainable
development. The goal is to increase the share of renewable energy
sources in electricity production to 30 percent by 2030. The
construction of solar and wind power plants in Absheron and other
regions is a testament to these efforts.
Key areas in the fight against climate change also include the
development of electric vehicle use in transportation,
environmentally friendly industrial development, reforestation, and
measures to combat soil degradation," he said.
He brought up the fact that green energy routes and zones are
still being developed around the nation.
"The new climate strategy should not only align with global
commitments but also take into account national priorities. The new
strategy is expected to cover all economic sectors and aim at
developing a low-carbon economy. However, significant challenges
remain that require solutions.
One of the biggest challenges is the need to increase the
capacity for climate change adaptation. Limited access to clean
technologies and international climate financing makes it difficult
to implement new projects at the local level. Another major issue
is strengthening the legal framework. While Azerbaijan's climate
legislation in many respects meets international standards,
additional reforms are needed for more effective climate action,"
he noted.
Babayev also mentioned that the introduction of clearer and more
specific mechanisms in legislation will not only help fulfill
global climate commitments but also prevent violations in this
area.
"Dear participants, the main theme and priority of COP29 is
climate financing. At the Baku Conference, a new collective
quantitative target in the fight against climate change is expected
to be agreed upon. In addition, the discussions at COP will cover
important areas such as climate change mitigation and
adaptation.
Special attention will also be given to the transparency of
countries' reporting and the development, and submission of
national adaptation plans. During the event, Azerbaijan, as the
president of COP29, has proposed 14 key initiatives. Our goal is to
propose new approaches and innovative pathways not only at the
national but also at the global level," added the COP29
president.
