Iran plans to farm 200,000 tons of warm-water fish

(MENAFN) Ali Elviri, chairman of Iran’s Warm-Water Fishes Breeding Companies Union, announced plans to Farm 200,000 tons of warm-water fish. However, he also highlighted challenges posed by the summer heat, which has negatively impacted fish production. The elevated water temperatures during the hot months lead to the accumulation of ammonia gas at the bottom of fish ponds, creating problems for producers.

Despite these production difficulties, the Iranian Ministry of Agriculture’s Office of Quality Improvement, Processing, and Aquatic Market reported positive news for the country's fish export sector. According to Abbas Mokhtari, the director general of the office, Iran's fish exports were valued at USD53.3 million during the first quarter of the current Iranian calendar year, which runs from March 20 to June 20. This represents a significant increase compared to the same period last year, when exports were valued at USD30.6 million.

In terms of volume, Iran exported 29,582 tons of fish in the first quarter of this year, up from 18,301 tons during the same period last year. The total value of fishery exports for the first quarter of the current year reached USD121.4 million from 73,369 tons, a substantial increase from the previous year’s USD93.1 million from 52,282 tons. This indicates a more than 30 percent increase in value and a 40 percent rise in weight year-on-year.

Mokhtari's announcement reflects the growth in Iran's fishery export sector, despite the challenges faced by the warm-water fish farming industry. The increase in export figures underscores the sector's expanding role in Iran's economy.
