UN reports around 26M people in Sudan extremely hungry

(MENAFN) On Tuesday, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric expressed grave concern over the worsening food crisis in Sudan, underlining the severity of the humanitarian situation in the country. According to Dujarric, almost 26 million men, women, and children in Sudan are acutely hungry, a number that is comparable to the entire population of Australia. This dire statistic highlights the scale of the food insecurity crisis that Sudan is currently facing.

Among these 26 million individuals, approximately 750,000 are teetering on the brink of famine, classified as IPC (Integrated Food Security) phase 5, which is the most critical level of food insecurity. This phase signifies that these people are experiencing extreme food shortages, with a high likelihood of starvation and malnutrition.

The crisis has been exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in Sudan, which has been raging since April 2023. The fighting involves the Sudanese army, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who is also the head of the ruling Sovereign Council, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), commanded by his former deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo. The conflict has led to significant casualties, with at least 12,260 people reported killed and more than 33,000 injured, according to UN figures.

The humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate as nearly 6.8 million people have been displaced from their homes, either within Sudan or in neighboring countries, seeking refuge from the violence. Despite multiple cease-fire agreements brokered by Saudi Arabia and US mediators, these efforts have so far failed to halt the violence or alleviate the humanitarian crisis.

The UN's alarm over the food situation in Sudan reflects a broader concern about the impact of the conflict on civilian life, emphasizing the urgent need for international intervention and support to address both the immediate food shortages and the underlying causes of the ongoing violence.
