Trump envoy puts blame on EU regarding Ukraine crisis

(MENAFN) Richard Grenell, a close associate of United States presidential candidate Donald Trump and a prominent figure who may be considered for Secretary of State if Trump wins the election, has argued that the ongoing crisis in Ukraine is primarily a European responsibility. Speaking in an interview with the German tabloid Bild on Friday, Grenell emphasized that the conflict, situated in Europe’s “own backyard,” should be managed largely by European nations rather than the United States.

Grenell, who previously held senior diplomatic roles during Trump’s first term, compared the situation to a hypothetical war in Mexico, suggesting that the US would handle such a conflict largely on its own without seeking significant European assistance. He asserted that during Trump's presidency, Europe experienced no wars, implying that the continent was more stable under the previous administration.

Criticizing current President Joe Biden, Grenell pointed out that Biden has not engaged in direct dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin for three years. He suggested that while talking to adversaries is not a solution in itself, it is a necessary tactic in diplomacy.

Grenell has been actively vocal about the Ukrainian conflict, proposing earlier this month that Ukraine should delay its NATO membership and consider transforming into a federation with increased regional autonomy as a potential solution to end the hostilities.
