America publishes nuclear stockpile information

(MENAFN) The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) has released updated information on the United States' nuclear arsenal, revealing that the stockpile comprised 3,748 warheads as of September 2023. This disclosure, made public on Friday, shows a slight decrease from the 3,750 warheads reported in September 2020, reflecting a stable stockpile size over the past few years.

The latest figures include both active and inactive warheads but exclude those that have been retired. The NNSA highlighted that from 1994 to 2023, the United States dismantled a total of 12,088 nuclear warheads, with 405 dismantled between 2020 and 2023. Additionally, around 2,000 retired warheads are currently awaiting dismantlement. This number marks a significant reduction from the peak of 31,255 warheads in 1967.

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) data for 2024 indicates that the US remains the second-largest nuclear power globally, with a total of 5,044 warheads, trailing behind Russia, which holds 5,580 warheads.
