Von der Leyen prepares EU`s union for defense

(MENAFN) European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced her ambition to transform the European Union into a “defense union” if she is re-elected for a second term. In her vision for the 27-nation bloc, she proposes the establishment of a unified defense market. Speaking ahead of a crucial vote in the European Parliament on Thursday, von der Leyen highlighted the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine, noting that Russia remains aggressive and is potentially counting on Europe and the West to lose resolve.

Von der Leyen affirmed her commitment to supporting Ukraine, emphasizing that “Europe will stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes.” She characterized the current situation as a pivotal moment, asserting that “for the very first time, our liberty is at stake.” In light of these threats, she argued that it is imperative to strengthen European defenses and proposed the creation of a robust European defense union to safeguard its citizens.

In her proposal, von der Leyen stressed that while the European Union must retain control over its security and military capabilities within member states, NATO will continue to be the cornerstone of collective defense. Her vision includes developing a single defense market, launching joint investment programs in arms, and establishing common defense projects such as a continent-wide air defense system. She criticized the current European Union defense sector for being overly reliant on foreign allies and described its defense spending as insufficient and ineffective.

Von der Leyen’s plan aims to address these issues by enhancing the European Union’s autonomous defense capabilities and reducing dependency on external sources. Her proposals reflect a broader strategic shift towards a more integrated and self-sufficient European defense framework amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
